The NZ Breakers roared into life on October 1 2003, defeating the Adelaide36ers by a single point in front of a sold out North Shore Events Centre. Professional basketball had hit New Zealand, with entertainment, action and excitement of the ANBL now a weekly experience in Auckland.
Over the short 7 years of the club's history the Breakers have established themselves as a club who do things differently - the club values of One Team + Courage + Integrity = Champions are emblazoned on the wall of the Breakers' training facility and is the glue that binds the club together. "Team is Everything" is the slogan that the club lives by , and the unselfish , do-it-for-team attitude has become the club's playing style and image.
The club took a significant step during the 2007-08 NBL season, qualifying for its first playoff series and then defeating the Cairns Taipans in an emotional elimination playoff in Cairns. The Brisbane Bullets proved a step too far two days later, but a benchmark had been set - the playoffs was where this club wanted to live. The 2008-09 season saw the Breakers lift that benchmark, setting a series of club records on the way to securing a first ever home playoff, and then reaching the semi finals against the Melbourne Tigers.
The Club enters the 2010/11 season with an enthusiasm brought about in the fifth season of Head Coach Andrej Lemanis. Returning Assistant Coach Dean Vickerman, who is also the Assistant Coach for the NZ Tall Blacks, and returning Assistant Coach Judd Flavell bring a high energy, high excitement brand of basketball that reflects the Breakers name.
The club’s commitment to on court success is reflected in its active role in the community, with thousands of basketballs and coaching manuals distributed every year into local schools, and the Breakers Atlas Place home base being filled every day by the next generation of future Breakers.
Rather than letting that go with the end of the season, that pain has been burning in all of us right through the off season. Players and coaches have been involved in the Bartercard NBL, playing around the world, and then taking on the world’s best at the FIBA World Championships, but always just below the surface has been a feeling of having a job to finish this season at the Breakers.
To make that happen, we have gone about putting a team together that can continue to play the fast paced, action packed style that was blowing opposition teams off the court last season. We have kept the core of the squad together, and handed bigger roles to Tom Abercrombie, Corey Webster and Alex Pledger – and we know they will deliver. We have brought back rebounding machine Mika Vukona, which will already be giving opposition coaches headaches as to how they keep him off the boards. We convinced Kevin Braswell that he needed to be a Breaker again this season, and he has jumped at the chance. And we have added Utah State star Gary Wilkinson as a tough inside presence. Young kiwis Josh Bloxham and BJ Anthony complete the squad as development players.
We think we are ready and are committed to making this a big Breakers season. Your role in that is just as important as ours – we love the noise and passion every game at the NSEC, and it makes our home a very hard place for opposition teams to come to. We want you to help us make it even more of a cauldron – bring you friends and family, and tell everyone what a great place the NSEC is to be on breakers night. You are our 6th man on the court, the louder and more passionate you are the harder we will play – so get LOUD!
Every member, every sponsor and every fan is part of the team, and part of our family. We are proud to represent you both on the court and in all the work we do in the community as part of the Breakers club, and hope that you are just as proud to be part of the Breakers too.
With key players Kirk Penney, CJ Bruton and Dillon Boucher returning, the surprise re-signing of Kevin Braswell and new import Gary Wilkinson, together with naming-rights sponsor, the NZ Breakers look to move beyond last season in their quest for their first ANBL Championship!
Thank you for our support, your noise, your passion – we plan on repaying it with sweat, effort and success in the 2010-11 season.
