Merchandise and Licencing Manager

The National Basketball League (NBL) is responsible for the management and delivery of the men’s professional basketball league in Australia and New Zealand. The NBL is currently under-going unprecedented generational change with the League now wholly owned by the Clubs in conjunction with significant Private Equity partners.

With this new degree of solid corporate structure the NBLs vision and determination is to provide a quality professional men’s basketball competition in Australia and New Zealand on a sound financial footing, bringing security and profitability for all clubs.

To drive and support this growth the NBL is seeking a Merchandise Manager to drive commercial growth for the League.

 

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the GM Marketing & Commercial, the Merchandise Manager will review, develop and implement processes, systems and procedures to actualise the Merchandise opportunity for both the NBL and its Clubs. The role provides a high level of autonomy and requires the Merchandise Manager to manage the whole process from idea generation and distribution channel creation to determining when and what to order to maximise sales and captalise on opportunities.

  • Working closely with GM Commercial & Marketing to establish a long term merchandise strategy to drive commercial growth for the League and its Clubs
  • Establishment and management/fulfillment of an NBL on-line store
  • Based on consumer insight, the Merchandise Manager will be responsible for creating, sourcing, ordering and selling of new product ranges across player (present & historic), fashion and lifestyle
  • Developing marketing, promotion and pricing strategies to drive purchase
  • Developing and managing ordering process with Clubs and supporting Clubs to maximise their merchandise sales
  • Manage relationship with apparel supplier

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • The successful candidate will have significant merchandise experience with a working knowledge of suppliers, distributers and consumers.
  • The Merchandise Manager will be confident in preparing annual budgets and reporting on results to senior management of the NBL.
  • They will have experience driving consumer retail strategies within an alternative sporting body or other strong retail channels
  • A strategic and innovative thinker with the ability to develop business cases for investment in merchandise and will be 'hands-on' in the delivery of new initiatives
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in related discipline such as business, marketing and or retail, with at least 4 years experience
  • Experience in developing merchandise promotional activities to drive

The NBL’s  headquarters are in Sydney. Candidates must therefore be in a position to relocate to Sydney if necessary.

Media and PR Manager

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the GM Commercial & Marketing, the Media and PR Manager will be responsible for;

  • Developing and implementing a compelling 12-month calendar to drive awareness and engagement of the NBL
  • Creating an up-to-date media database identifying top influencers and developing a clear action plan to drive engagement for the NBL
  • Developing strong working relationships with Club Media Managers and supporting Clubs in what and how they communicate to the Media
  • Providing support to the GM Commercial & Marketing in the establishment of an NBL Media Unit for the delivery of NBL content – Broadcast, Website, Digital, Imagery, Editorial Content etc
  • Support GM Commercial & Marketing on the development of a Media & Broadcast enhancement plan to improve game presentation and the delivery of a first class product
  • Identify PR opportunities to drive the recruitment of new fans to the NBL
  • Develop a internal and external communication policy to ensure NBL/Clubs communicate professionally to the media
  • Develop and implement media training to all clubs, referees and NBL staff
  • Line Management of NBL Media Relations team member

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • The successful candidate will have significant Media and PR experience with a working knowledge of the media landscape and with an established media network
  • The Media and PR Manager will have strong oral and written communication skills, with a journalism writing style to drive editorial content
  • This role will be autonomous and therefore the candidate will have a high level of drive and initiative, with a strong results-orientated attitude
  • A candidate with a strong basketball knowledge base is preferred
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in related discipline such as business or sales with at least 4 years experience

Commercial Manager

Reporting to the GM Commercial & Marketing, the Commercial Manager will be responsible for;

  • Developing the NBL as an attractive commercial proposition
  • Creating a sponsor strategy and exploit opportunities through existing networks
  • Identifying and selling assets to secure commercial revenues for the NBL and to hit pre-defined sales targets
  • Managing sponsor relationships to deliver rights for the sponsors across the NBL and its Clubs
  • Identifying and exploiting new commercial opportunities for the League
  • Support Merchandise Manager in the commercial exploitation of League and Club merchandise
  • Supporting Clubs in the development of their commercial strategies

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • The successful candidate will have significant commercial experience with a strong network to drive sponsorships
  • This role will be autonomous and therefore the candidate will have a high level of drive and initiative, with a strong result-orientated attitude
  • The candidate needs to be an innovative thinker who can identify and exploit commercial opportunities
  • Strong interpersonal skills will be key in order to manage sponsor relationships and identify opportunities to leverage existing sponsorships harder as well as to secure new sponsorships.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in related discipline such as business or sales with at least 4 years experience
