Hawks Sign Swingman Demitrius Conger

The Illawarra Hawks are excited to announce the signing of import Demitrius Conger for the upcoming 2017/18 NBL campaign.

A 6”6’ small forward, Conger brings a wide array of skills to Illawarra, including the willingness to fast break, a crisp, deep shooting action, and the ability to finish at the rim.

A Brooklyn native who has applied his trade throughout Europe in recent years, Conger comes to the Hawks following four years of professional basketball in Italy, Greece and most recently Belgium, playing for the Antwerp Giants where he averaged 11.5 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 42 games played.

His offensive skill set and experience playing professionally will suit the Hawks experienced roster and up-tempo playing style, with Conger adding another dynamic element to the squad.

“It was really important for our club to find a quality import who had extensive playing experience in Europe” said Hawks Head Coach Rob Beveridge.

“As a club, we have had two very good years where we have made the Semi Finals and Grand Final and we feel to take that next step we need a player who is athletic, competitive, has an ability to play both ends of the floor, and most importantly is of high character.

“Demitrius ticks all those boxes” says Beveridge.

With the pre-season officially kicking off next week, the announcement comes at a superb time for the Hawks.

Asked about his thoughts on playing for Illawarra and his upcoming transition to the NBL, Conger said he is eager to get his feet on the ground and get to work.

“I’m very excited about the opportunity to play for the Hawks and in the NBL” said Conger.

“I feel like the fans can expect me to go out there and compete every night”.

“I knew someone who has played in the NBL before and they had nothing but great things to say.”

“Aside from the things I’ve seen on TV, I’ve never been to Australia, so it’ll be a brand new experience for me.”

Demitrius Conger will arrive in Wollongong on August 18 and will be joined shortly after by returning import and star guard Rotnei Clarke who will arrive on August 24.
