Melbourne United today announced that Dean Vickerman has been appointed Head Coach of the Club for the next two seasons.
The former Championship-winning Head Coach of the New Zealand Breakers is one of the most respected coaches in the NBL.
Melbourne United CEO Vince Crivelli said the Club is thrilled to welcome such a positive and experienced NBL Head Coach and local Victorian basketball identity back into the Melbourne basketball family.
“Dean’s energetic nature, positivity, strategic thinking and experience in leading Championship NBL teams were all factors which saw him as our top candidate for this pivotal role.
“His long-standing connection to the Victorian basketball community, built over more than twenty years of service to the sport, was also critical to his appointment. He has a great depth of knowledge in further developing a winning team culture and we look forward to working with him for the next two seasons,” Crivelli said.
On accepting the role of Head Coach, Dean Vickerman said, “I’ve been on a journey since leaving Melbourne in 2006, so to come back to where it all started is very exciting. Melbourne is my home town and it’s a great opportunity to support this Club to go in the direction that we all want it to. I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
Vickerman’s impressive resume includes three straight NBL championships as the New Zealand Breakers Assistant Coach. He was then appointed the Club’s Head Coach and in the 2014/15 season, led the team to an unprecedented fourth NBL championship title in five years. In the 2015/16 season, his last as the Breakers Head Coach, he led them to another Grand Final series.
Vickerman joins Melbourne United from the Sydney Kings, where he spent the 2016/17 NBL season as an Assistant Coach.
