A Not for Profit community based organisation
Wollongong NRE Hawks Ltd. was formed in 2009 after three months of community lobbying which resulted in raising $500,000 in working capital by community Foundation Members, the continued support and investment by naming rights sponsor Australian Health Management the preferred health insurer of the Wollongong Hawks and a $1 million bank guarantee provided by mining company Gujarat NRE.
Hawks Captain Mat Campbell was instrumental in the rejuvenation of the new not for profit organisation, Mat led a “Save the Hawks” Campaign that generated the support not only from the community but the entire local media in the Illawarra.
The organisation will be governed by an 
interim Board of Directors who will see out the start up of the new Wollongong Hawks.
