A Stronger Community Partnership

We have taken a new direction this season to increase our community involvement. This season we have identified five key community groups and charities that focus on providing fun, care and development opportunities for youth of different backgrounds. Our five partners are:

Foundation for Youth Development

FYD is a leading organisation managing proven youth development programmes aimed to inspire school aged children to reach their full potential. Through FYD’s current programmes Kiwi Can, Stars and Project K they have helped over 18,000 young people each year to improve their confidence and become healthier individuals who contribute positively to society.

Turn Your Life Around Trust

TYLA works within local communities in New Zealand to deliver tailor-made programmes that help inspire ‘at risk' youth to turn their lives around.

Starship Foundation                                                                                                                                                                          Starship is New Zealand’s premier children’s hospital. The Starship Foundation charity works with the hospital to provide additional equipment, support and fun to staff, patients and families.

Quantum Sport                                                                                                                                                                              Quantum Sport delivers innovative programmes through schools, high performance academies and sporting bodies. Their core focus is helping train and support a new generation of young sports people that will result in well-rounded athletes and kids, positive role models, coaches, teachers and leaders who have strong foundations in their lives.

Special Olympics.

Special Olympics New Zealand is a charitable trust offering year round programmes of sports training and competitions for young people and adults with intellectual disabilities. Athletes can be as young as five and there is no upper age limit.

Together we will lift the profile of these groups’ events and through basketball encourage our youth to make better and brighter decisions in their lives. Our Breakers players will be getting involved by making regular visits to schools, the hospital and community centres. Players will be interacting with the kids through fun games, running basketball sessions, mentoring opportunities and speaking at awards ceremonies.

Watch this space and check out the Breakers website for updates on our new partnerships through the year.

Communtiy Coaching: Not Just for the Mainstream

Alternative Education is a programme set up throughout New Zealand to cater for the needs and rights of students aged 13 to 15 years who have become alienated from 'mainstream' schooling. Students find themselves in this programme for a number of reasons including those who are habitual truants and those who have behaviorally challenges and are consequently excluded from school. Alternative Education aims to provide a constructive alternative delivery of education for these students.

The Auckland north programme consists of 5 providers spread from Glenfield to Warkworth.

Throughout July, August and September these students have been invited to take part in a new initiative with the BDT community coaches. Every week over 30 students from the different   centers make their way to the Breakers training facility for an hour of basket and fitness training.

The programme has been in place for 2 weeks no and we have had a great response from the students and teachers so far. Teachers have commented on their students new found interest in basketball,

“They are taking every opportunity they can during the week to practice the skills they have learnt here. The students have marked out lines in the classroom to practice the games Hayden has taught us”.

Breakers Community Coaches Raise Up and Represent

Raise up and Represent is a youth programme that has been designed to give youth a safe and healthy environment in which to relax, socialize and achieve their goals. The aim is to support youth in being physically fit, to encourage personal ownership and leadership while fostering a sense of pride and respect for themselves, and the communities in which they live. The programme is run by the YMCA and has recently developed a new arm to provide free basketball sessions to our youth in West Auckland. Every Friday afternoon the Massey YMCA have arranged for the community hall in Te Atatu to open their doors, Lawrence our Breakers Community Coach attends for 3 hours to run anyone who wants to take part through a basketball workshop. Youth have the chance to learn from Lawrence’s years of on court experience most recently capped with Under 21 national ages title as the Head coach of the North Harbour Under 21 team.

Lawrence has been involved with the programme since March of 2010 and is a great opportunity to not only help develop the game in our community but to also provide coaching feedback to local school coaches and parents who wish to attend to programme and learn from Lawrence.

Community Coaches Helping with More than Basketball.

Our community coaches are out and about every week delivering basketball drills and skills session’s to primary and intermediate school children all over Auckland. This week the coaches have helped to deliver more than just lessons in basketball.

Coach Lawrence has spent time at Birkdale North Primary over the past three weeks school running through dribbling, passing and shooting games with children from each of the schools 6 classes. After taking part in the session one teacher was inspired by the excitement generated from the kids to incorporate the basketball sessions into her writing topics. The teacher and children from room 2 then brainstormed how they would turn their basketball session into an article. Together they constructed a plan of what they could remember, their introduction, the activities they wanted to write about and a conclusion.

“It’s great to see that my time in the school can be used to help these children learn in other areas as well” commented Lawrence after he was presented with two of the children’s articles complete with school photos from the event.

Breakers Partner with Community Basketball Initiatives

Breakers community coach, Hayden Allen has been out and about providing coaching advice, basketball games and drills to sports teachers and students from schools around the Counties Manukau region this month.

The Teachers initiative was set up by Counties Manukau Sport (CMS) to enable teachers to enhance their coaching skills and learn games that can be implemented into their school PE periods. The majority of the teachers were from primary and intermediate level schools with some teachers attending from special education units at local high schools as well. A number of sports were covered throughout the day including netball, rugby, league, hockey and basketball

Hayden introduced teachers to the basics of ‘teaching basketball’ to students of all ages. Games were adapted to meet the large class sizes at the schools. Skills specific games were replaced with games that kept students attention and could be run with over 30 students at once. Teachers found it beneficial to focus on games that kept all their kids occupied and having fun at once, rather than a technique and fundamentals focus of the game.

All teachers involved received material from Counties Manukau Basketball (CMBB) and the New Zealand Breakers skills booklets. The booklets explain the basic principles and rules of basketball that will be useful for teachers taking on school teams or to pass on to parents looking for resources to help coach those teams.

Hayden has also helped to enhance a new Kiwisport initiative providing basketball to local schools in Otara. The Otara Recreation centre, CMBB and Counties Manukau Sports Field of Dreams team worked with local schools to invite them to the “1 Day Fun Day” basketball “taster” initiative. The event was aimed at increasing the student’s interest in basketball and setting a foundation to build basketball leagues in the area. Twelve schools took up the offer over a week which saw over 600 kids participate in “fun” activities including a mixture of basketball skills and games sessions. Staff and students from the Otara Recreation centre and Manukau Institute of Technology delivered the activities supported by CMBB.

With the ongoing support of Counties Manukau Sport and Counties Manukau Basketball these schools have the ability to continue to increase the in-schools coaching and support they get for their basketball programmes. For more information on basketball opportunities available in Counties Manukau, click here.

Breakers Team up with TYLA

Breakers community coaches have teamed up with the TYLA (Turn Your Life Around) programme to offer a basketball development programme to at risk youth in Lynfield.

TYLA was created in 1996 to identify a better means of reducing the number of young offenders in New Zealand and providing support and choices to the young people 'at risk ' of offending. They work within local communities to deliver tailor-made programmes that help inspire ‘at risk' youth to turn their lives around.

They are currently running programmes in Otara and Auckland Central West. Each year the programme continues to advance its mission to empower young people through different mediums. Working  tirelessly with the Lynfield Recreation Centre and the New Zealand Police, TYLA’s partnership with the Breakers in the creation of this programme is a strongly supported by the Breakers own core values. The Breakers mission to use team, integrity and courage to create champions is a perfect fit for the aims of this project.

Every week during Term 2 our coaches will be taking up to 30 kids through a series of fun drills and games to teach them the skills of the game and help them develop their own talents. Our coaches Hayden Allen and Lawrence Lianda both have interesting stories to tell as to how they have made it to where they are today and are the ideal candidates to lead the on court side of this programme.

If you would like more information on what TYLA check out their website http://www.tyla.co.nz/

Breakers Players Star Imports at Local Gala

Breakers stand out players Tony Ronaldson and Thomas Abercrombie extended their career highlights by making themselves available as Imports in the Glenfield Intermediate school gala day.

Glenfield Intermediate hosted their first school gala day on Friday April 30th. Students and Teachers came up with a range of different ideas and initiatives to help raise money for their school. There were place kicking competitions, gum boot throwing, skating and a 3 on 3 competitions. Each team paid a dollar to register their players with the aim of winning three games in a row and putting their hands into the prize box for a range of great [prizes donated by local businesses. Tony and Tom were the cherry on top for teams that thought they might struggle to reach this goal. Each team could also pay a little extra and buy the services of their favorite Breakers for a game to help them overcome any difficult opponents.

The area surrounding the basketball court quickly became a popular place for spectators as the Breakers took their spots on different teams to play kids full of nervous excitement. It was great entertainment with Breakers matching up against players sometimes 3 feet smaller in size.

Slam Dunking Junk Pays Off

Week of March 8th

The Breakers 2009-10 season is over, the New Zealand Basketball League has started but the Breakers community programmes haven’t quite finished, the team still had one last school to visit. On Tuesday the 9th of March 60 year 5 and 6 students from Sunnynook primary school hosted the team’s final appearance.  Over an hour children spent their time mixing with Oscar Forman, Tony Ronaldson and Rick Rickert working on their dribbling and passing skills and playing full court games against their favorite Breakers players.

Sunnynook was awarded this visit as a part of the North Shore City Councils schools recycling initiative.  Throughout the season Alex Pledge and Corey Webster worked with the council visiting different schools on the North Shore promoting the Slam Dunk your Junk recycling campaign. A part of which included each school performing a 2 minute rap about reducing, reusing, recycling and being a tidy kiwi. The winning school received a visit from the team and tickets to a Breakers game.

HAND was the name of Sunnynooks winning group lead by Nicoli Demsfilez and David Meki. The boys took their families to the Breakers final game this season against the Gold Coast Blaze and had a great time.

Breakers Make-a-Wish Come True

Week of February 8th

Finnegan Buick is a positive and dynamic eight year old boy, who loves sport and especially his sporting icon Kirk Penney. At five years old Finn was diagnosed with leukaemia and has been courageously fighting this life threatening illness for the last three years.  In this time he has undergone numerous operations and has emerged as a confident, chatty young man. Finnegan wrote a letter to the Make-a-Wish foundation last year to grant his wish of getting a new laptop. He also happened to mention in his letter that he is a big Breakers fan and especially admires Kirk Penney who “always gets up after he has been knocked down”. On Thursday the 4th of February, Finn’s wish was granted but much larger than he had ever expected.

Finnegan and his family were invited to attend their very own meet and greet with the Breakers team at their game day shoot around session last week. He took the opportunity with both hands to make the most out of his time with the team, collecting signatures and photos with all of the players as well as taking to the court and shooting a few hoops with his hero.

Kirk Penney and Rick Rickert then took Finn out for lunch where he received his brand new laptop computer, printer and a selection of games. But his wish didn’t stop there, Finn and his family where back again that night to watch the Breakers as they took on the Wollongong Hawks. Finn was seated right next to his favourite player on the team bench to watch first hand as Kirk and the team beat the Hawks in their must win quest for the play offs. This was an unforgettable night for Finn who hopes to be in remission by the end of the month.

The Breakers are proud to work with the Make-a-Wish Foundation to grant opportunities like this to children with life threatening illness. The foundation has a dedicated group of volunteers all over the country that help to bring the wishes to life. They rely on corporate sponsorship, charitable trusts and donations from the public to facilitate the granting of wishes.  If you wish to make a donation or find out more about Make-a-Wish please click here to visit their website.

A Breaker Experience Like No Other

Week of February 1st

Monday was a special day for children and families from the Home school Auckland Sports and Culture Association (HASCA).  Over 80 children from around Auckland made their way out to the Breakers training facility to have their very own Burger King Breakers Experience.

Children and parents arrived at the Breakers training facility for two hours of entertainment as they found out what it is like to be part of the Breakers team. Families sat on the courtside stands to watch the teams first training session of the week and get a glimpse into the work that goes into playing in the Austrlian Nation Basketball League. Throughout practice small groups of families were taken on a guided tour of the stadium by Breakers team manager Chris Millbank. Each group having the chance to investigate the players’ lounge, locker rooms and weights room as Chris imparted his stories and experinces with the the team in each room.  After practice, the children took to the court for an hour of coaching from Breakers players and coaching staff. The children worked on their skills through a series of drills before finishing off with some fun games of Golden Child.

HASCA is an incorporated society that was originally created in 2001 to allow their secondary school basketball teams to compete in the Auckland secondary schools competition.  The society was set up by North Shore home educating parents to promote and unite home educating families in sport and cultural events. Since 2001 they have undertaken many different sports, educational and cultural events including an annual family sports and outdoor pursuit days, a midyear family ball, art festivals featuring their own choir and dance groups, and various music, singing, dance and drama activities.

Breakers Take Thier Game to Local Schools

Week of November 23rd

The Breakers were out and about this week and participated in two Breaker Ball visits. The Breaker Ball visits give students the opportunity to see the players live in action, in their very own school gym.

First stop was Randwick Park. Last year the Breakers visit was a huge success, with over 200 kids crowding into their gym to support their miniball teams take on their Breaker heroes. This year was no different. Once again the Manurewa Decile 1 school filled their gym and then completed the atmosphere with a microphone and music system to bring the “game day feeling” live to all their students. The kids gave it their all and were then in for a real treat when they watched five of their teachers take to the court to show their basketball prowess against the visiting Breakers players. Breakers apprentice player Brad Anderson impressed the crowd with his defiance for the laws of gravity as he dunked and ally-opped the ball again and again to get the crowd to their feet!

Breakers Say Its Not OK

The Burger King New Zealand Breakers are proud to be a part of the White Ribbon Day Campaign. All Breakers players and staff will be wearing white ribbons next week to support saying ‘No' to family violence and we encourage all of New Zealand to do the same.

There are over 3,500 convictions recorded against men each year for assaults on women. We are behind this movement to raise awareness and create a change.

The White Ribbon Day campaign encourages men to talk openly about family violence, to provide support to men who want to change their abusive behavior and to challenge comments, statements, and actions by men that are abusive.

No violence within families is tolerable. If someone within the family is being frightened or intimidated by the behavior of someone else, it is not OK.   Violence isn’t just the physical, emotional or verbal behavior used to control someone through fear. Things we say, or don’t say, contribute to the abuse.

White Ribbon Day is the international day when people, particularly men, wear a white ribbon to show they won’t tolerate, condone or remain silent about violence against women.

It originated as a men’s movement in Canada and is now part of the United Nations annual calendar (International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women)

White Ribbon Day in New Zealand has grown rapidly – from 50,000 ribbons in 2006 to 500,000 in 2008 and 550 000 in 2009. Ribbons are made by inmates at Wellington Prison and Auckland Women’s Prison.

White Ribbons will be given out at the Breakers next home game on November 26th at the North Shore Events Centre. Come down and show your support.

Week of November 2nd

The NZ Breakers took on two schools last week in a “Harlem globetrotter” style exhibition games. The Home School Association and Kristin school students hosted the Breakers on their own school courts and put their skills to the test against their role models. The Schools weren’t short of support either with hundreds of their peers coming along to encourage their team and to meet the Breakers Players. They weren’t disappointed either with players pulling out all their tricks from sneaky behind the back passes, half court shoots and aerobatic ally oops and dunks.

The Breakers School programme has been designed to provide encouragement and opportunity to children in the community who may not get the chance to make it along to a Breakers Game. Kids who have never seen a game before see how exciting it is and will hopefully want to join one of their local teams

Sandra Dawson form the Home School association enthusiastically thanked the Breakers for running this programme “Not all of our children get the chance to come along to a game; this is a great opportunity to see the team perform. The kids will be talking about this for months to come”.
