What attributes do big men need to be successful in the NBL?

Rob Beveridge, Perth coach:
I think it’s mobility, you’ve got to be a mobile big. Daniel Johnson does a great job of spreading the floor and shooting ball as well as playing inside a bit, and I think that’s what big guys need to be, inside-outside players.

Chris Anstey, retired Tiger: They’ve got to be able to guard someone, and you’ve got to be able to change shots in the lane. You’ve got to willing to help and trust your teammates are going to help you. More than anything you’ve got to be able to impose yourself on the game when it calls for it.

Gordie McLeod, Wollongong coach: If you look 20 years ago or even 10 years ago the big guys today are more mobile, more athletic, their skill package is better. So what you find is the big guys will have to add another dimension to their game or they’ll get left behind.

Daniel Johnson, Adelaide centre: You’ve got to have a strong body, good hands, good touch around the basket, to be able to set screens to get the guards open and be a good rebounder. It’s a more up-and-down league and that plays to my advantage because quickness has always been a strength.

Larry Sengstock, Basketball Australia CEO: Playing big, you’ve got to be prepared to mix it. But it depends on your team, with Luke Nevill he is a big genuine centre, so then around him you need four-men and three-men who can shoot the ball. Whereas with Khazzouh, he is a mobile big man so Sydney can put a pretty flexible team around him.
