NBL Community is an exciting new initiative for the NBL creating an overarching Community Program that will harness the collective and comprehensive community engagement undertaken by all NBL teams across Australia and New Zealand. It will also provide new opportunities for the league to embrace community program initiatives and support Basketball Australia’s community development plan implementation.
Basketball is one of Australia’s largest grass roots participation sports with a million plus participants. It is a sport played almost equally by males and females, an Olympic sport where Australia is ranked 3rd in the world and boasts a world class men’s (NBL) and women’s (WNBL) national league.
The NBL since its inception in 1979 has demonstrated its commitment to community. Our players embrace their role as not only ambassadors of the game but also as role models in the community and undertake a minimum of 165 hours of service each season in the community.
NBL Community has three key focus areas aligned to promote positive community outcomes and experiences focused for primary school aged children. The three focus areas are:
-
Community Program Delivery
Supporting programs that promote education, health and active living, and social inclusion through initiatives that support multiculturalism and indigenous communities. -
Pathway & Participation Development
Utilising this country’s elite playing talent to promote grass roots participation in basketball. Working with State Associations to deliver Basketball Australia’s game development program Aussie Hoops which enhances the opportunities for young players to develop their basketball skills and encourage participation in basketball. -
Charitable Support
Partnering with charity organisations to promote charitable causes leveraging the national media profile, varied communication channels, themed rounds, game days and NBL players to promote charity initiatives and fundraising campaigns.
Other features of NBL Community include an annual Community Themed Round and in excess of 900 additional player appearances for the league to effectively deliver the outcomes expected of NBL Community.

Summer holidays have come to an end and that means only one thing - So You Think You Can Play is...

As part of this special themed round, all seven iiNet NBL Championship home games for Round 21 will help support Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation.
Players in Round 21 games will wear rainbow shoelaces and sell rainbow merchandise at venues to help raise money and awareness for the cause. It is envisaged that the referee’s will also wear Zaidee’s Rainbow Wristpockets during the three televised matches.
Chief Executive Officer of Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation, Allan Turner, said the NBL’s support was invaluable.
“We are so proud to be the chosen charity of the NBL’s inaugural community round. The exposure that organ and tissue donation will receive through this wonderful initiative from the NBL cannot be underestimated, and it is particularly pertinent given that it coincides with DonateLife week. This is another great leap forward for Zaidee’s, and one that we hope will open more doors for us across Australia. If this round helps to save the life of just one person by inspiring discussion amongst the community, then it is an outstanding success as far are we are concerned.”
