Sydney Add St Mary’s Standout Pineau

The Sydney Kings today announced that power forward Dane Pineau has signed with the club for the upcoming 2017-2018 National Basketball League season. The Kings will hold an option for a second season.

One of Australia’s rising ‘big’ prospects, 22 year old Pineau comes to the Kings following a solid four year stint at renowned St Mary’s College in California – a program that catapulted Patty Mills and Matthew Dellavedova to the NBA and numerous others to professional international careers.

Pineau finished as St Mary’s all-time leader in field goal percentage, connecting on nearly 62% of his attempts, and was frequently asked to guard larger, well-known centres from powerhouse NCAA programs.

Helping his team reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament in his senior season, the reliable sixth-man averaged 6.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game while shooting an efficient 61% from the field. St Mary’s finished with an impressive 29-5 win/loss record for the season.

Additionally, Pineau was a member of the Australian team competing at the 2013 FIBA Under-19 World Championships held in the Czech Republic. The previous year he captained the Australian Under-18 team at the 2012 Albert Schweitzer Games in Germany.

Standing 206cm (6’9”) and weighing 102kg (225lb), Pineau is a second-generation basketball player, his father Brad having played a total of 52 NBL games with the Devonport Warriors & Melbourne Tigers between 1989 and 1991.

Blessed with good size, handy touch around the basket and a strong work ethic, the Kings believe Pineau’s recruitment will provide frontcourt depth and an exciting upside that the club’s coaches will look to develop.

Sydney Kings Managing Director Jeff Van Groningen travelled to Nevada to attend the West Coast Conference (WCC) tournament in March and observed Pineau first-hand for the duration of the event. The recruitment of the young prospect began directly after his college career concluded.

“We’ve had our eye on Dane for some time and we are pleased that we’ve been able to bring this quality young person to our program. He’s a big man with considerable potential who played his role very well during his time at St Mary’s. For rookies, work ethic and bringing a winning approach to practice every day are important attributes, and we feel that he’ll bring those things. We welcome Dane to the Kings and look forward to what lays ahead”, Van Groningen said.

Pineau will join his new teammates for the commencement of preseason training in late July.
