The Perth Wildcats have swept the National Basketball League’s awards for January, with Rob Beveridge winning Coach of the Month and forward Jesse Wagstaff snaring Player of the Month.
Despite playing off the bench, Wagstaff still managed to average 15.8 point, 4.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists for Perth. He shot 58% from the field for the period and also was a perfect 12-of-12 from the free throw line as he helped the Wildcats to a flawless 4-0 record for the month.
Wagstaff took out the Player of the Week award for Round 15 after scoring a career-high 25 points, as well as adding five rebounds and one steal in the Wildcats 92-80 victory over Gold Coast at Challenge Stadium.
The Wildcats’ star took out the January honours in a tight race, polling 30 votes to finish just two ahead of Gold Coast’s Adam Gibson on 28. New Zealand’s Cedric ‘Action’ Jackson came third in polling with 26 votes ahead of his Breakers’ teammate Thomas Abercrombie (22).
Rob Beveridge was named Coach of the Month after leading the Wildcats to a perfect January, with four straight wins. Perth recorded victories over Gold Coast, Melbourne, Sydney and Townsville in the period.
The W over playoff hopeful Townsville was a whopping 32-point win, which is the fourth-largest margin of victory recorded by any team so far this season. Perth also kept the Crocs to just 55 points in that match, which is the third lowest points total by any club this season.
Beveridge received 54 votes to be a comfortable winner of the award ahead of New Zealand Breakers mentor Andrej Lemanis on 46 votes and Townsville’s Paul Woolpert on 31.
The NBL’s Player and Coach of the Month for January took into account Rounds 14 to 17 of the iiNet NBL Championship inclusive. All NBL Head Coaches and accredited media were eligible to vote for the awards.
