8 Seconds | Example I

This is an example of an 8-Second violation. When a player in the backcourt gains control of a live ball, that team must cause the ball to go into its frontcourt within 8 seconds, or, if the shot clock is being operated correctly, before the shot clock reads 15 seconds. The team has caused the ball to go into its frontcourt when during a dribble from the backcourt to the frontcourt, the ball and both feet of the dribbler are completely in contact with the frontcourt. In this example, Blue 0 takes control of the ball on a defensive rebound. The 8-second starts as soon he gains control. The ball is then knocked loose by Red 53 as Blue 0 lands. Blue 3 then grabs the loose ball and dribbles up the floor. The 8-Second count continues during this play phase as the Red team never gain control. Blue 3 is still dribbling in the backcourt when 8 seconds elapse. This is an 8-Second violation by the Blue team.
