This is an example of a defender with his arms clearly out of the vertical to defend the shot attempt. In this example Gold 6 drives at defender Blue 6 who then drop steps and spins to enable a shot closer to the basket.

In attempting to defend the shot the defender has his arms forward, outside his cylinder in an attempt to smother the offensive player from elevating cleanly. This is a defensive foul by Blue 6.
