"Absolutely": Boomers' big Simmons call

National team coach Adam Caporn says he “absolutely” sees a world where Ben Simmons could play for the Australian Boomers in the coming years.

While Simmons hasn’t played at any level for the best part of a year and a half, his appearance at a mini-camp involving Australia’s biggest stars has the basketball world talking.  

The man himself amplified that conversation even further when he stated “that’s why I’m here”, when quizzed if he wants to play for his country.  

“To talk to him about it (playing for Australia) and see the enthusiasm he has and the confidence he’s building is super exciting,” Caporn told CODE Sports.  

“If you ask me, ‘do I see a potential for him to be a Boomer?’ — Absolutely.”

Simmons last played for Australia as a junior, but with major tournaments coming up at the FIBA World Cup in Qatar in 2027 and the Olympics in 2028, a player of his talent is hard not to consider.  

Other high-profile Boomers reportedly in attendance at the mini-camp include Josh Giddey, Dyson Daniels, Jock Landale, Patty Mills, Jack McVeigh, Alex Toohey, Lachlan Olbrich, and NBL Next Stars guards Luke Paul and Dash Daniels.
