'He's the real deal': 36ers board Gleeson's bus of success

The Adelaide 36ers were seconds away from winning the Hungry Jack's NBL26 championship, before falling in an incredible Game 5 to Sydney.

The journey to go one step better is now officially underway in the City of Churches, as the returning core are all desperate to bring a title back to Adelaide for the first time since 2002.

Instead of making mass changes, the Sixers brought back the majority of last season's roster, with the two main key additions being defensive dynamo Bul Kuol and five-time championship-winning coach Trevor Gleeson.

The latter has already made a big impact on the 36ers' playing group, said guard Flynn Cameron.

"He (Gleeson) is the real deal, you know," Cameron said during Thursday's media availability.

"Obviously, by his resume, but then just by the way [he] is holding everyone accountable.

"It's real old school; he doesn't beat around the bush, and I love it.

"That's how my dad coached me, so someone like that stepping into this role, I think, is great for us.

"[With Trev] it's all [about] the controllables. He hasn't really given insights, but he's just applying what his systems are.

"You're talking to a dude who's won, been at that pinnacle a lot of times.

"He knows what winning looks like. He knows what success looks like. He knows what winning programs are like; he's built that down with Perth, so he's trying to do the same with Adelaide, [and] we all got to get on that bus."

The NBL26 season was one to remember for the Tall Blacks star, winning the League's Most Improved Player award, as well as guiding his team to the Ignite Cup Final.

As successful as it was, Cameron explained his side are welcoming a 'fresh voice'.

"I'd say just the intensity is ramped up, and learning a new system," he said.

"It's a good refresh. We're going to be a lot deeper this year. We're going to go to our bench a lot more, so the way we're playing is we're going to be picking up the ball, bringing a lot of energy and with that comes a lot of excitement too."

Cameron and his 36ers open their NBL27 campaign against Melbourne and John Cain Arena on Saturday, September 19.
