REPORT: Boomers big guns taking part in mini-camp

Melbourne will reportedly host a player-led Australian Boomers mini-camp this week, as the team prepares for both the 2027 FIBA World Cup and 2028 Olympic Games.

Antscape's Marc J. Spears was the first to report on this camp at CourtSide Melbourne, which has no affiliation with Basketball Australia, when he stated that three-time NBA All Star and former number one overall Draft pick Ben Simmons would be 'taking part with 'zero restrictions'.

The 30-year-old, who spent last season rehabbing his injuries, has yet to play for the Boomers in a major tournament.

ESPN's Olgun Uluc has then reported the Simmons will be joined by fellow Australian senior men's program members Josh Giddey, Josh Giddey, Dyson Daniels, Jock Landale, Patty Mills, Jack McVeigh, Alex Toohey, Lachlan Olbrich, and NBL Next Stars guards Luke Paul and Dash Daniels.

"The camp is an opportunity for the national team's primary players to spend time playing together in what is a non-major tournament year, ahead of the 2027 World Cup and 2028 Los Angeles Olympics," Uluc said via ESPN.

The expectation is around 20 players will ultimately participate in the camp, as the Australian team work towards the August 27 to September 2020 World Cup in Qatar.

The Boomers are currently undefeated in the Asian Qualifying process, which remains ongoing, but are expected to qualify for the tournament.

Australia is coming off a sixth-placed finish at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
