REPORT: Breakers weighing import shake-up

Help could be on the way for Parker Jackson-Cartwright, with ESPN's Olgun Uluc reporting the New Zealand Breakers are weighing multiple roster moves.

Speaking on the Aussie Hoops Hour podcast, Uluc said the Breakers are scanning the import market for a combo guard to share the load with their marquee man.

"Gordie Herbert came out in that press conference and said Parker Jackson-Cartwright has to do everything. We need another guard or we need another carrier. We need someone to help him," Uluc said.

"It sounds like they're going to go and get that guy. So right now the New Zealand Breakers are gauging the import market for a guard of some sort. Feels like they're looking for a 2-1 type."

Uluc said wing import Josiah-Jordan James, who is nursing a hamstring injury, could be the unlucky player to make way.

"Something would have to give," he said. "It sounds like there's a chance that they move off Josiah-Jordan James, ultimately bring in a point guard or at least another guard to be next to Parker Jackson-Cartwright."

The Breakers' third import, Charles Bediako, has shown promising form. He turned in his best performance of the season against Perth on Saturday night, and Uluc believes he has done enough to hold his spot.

"My thinking at the time was, do they move off Bediako? Even though he'd been solid, do you move off him because you need to sacrifice someone to get a guard in?" Uluc said. "I think he's been good enough that you keep him."

Preston Le Gassick's spot could also be at risk, according to Uluc, as the 23-year-old deals with a neck injury.

The strong form of Mojave King, who is currently with the club as a nominated replacement player, could make that call easier.

"It does sound like there's a chance they also move off him [Le Gassick] and retain Mojave King and keep him full-time," Uluc said.

Uluc suggested the Breakers won't wait long to act.

"This sounds like it's going to happen and it also sounds like there's a chance this happens within the next one or two weeks," he said. "I don't think this team is going to sit on their hands."

The reported plans follow Herbert's frank assessment after Saturday night's 97-93 loss to the Perth Wildcats, in which Jackson-Cartwright posted 30 points, eight assists, four rebounds and three steals.

"I thought Parker was outstanding, but he has to do everything and we need another ball handler," Herbert said. "I think that's evident."

Herbert also hinted at reinforcements when asked where that help would come from.

"We've worked on stuff where he doesn't have the ball to initiate the offense," he said. "We're not very good at it right now, but obviously we have one import missing [Josiah-Jordan James] so I don't know … we'll have to see what we do there."
