Nathan Sobey has signed a two-year extension with South East Melbourne Phoenix after a career-best season, strengthening their championship push.

The South East Melbourne Phoenix have locked in MVP contender Nathan Sobey on a new two-year contract, with the second season a mutual option.

35-year-old Sobey has had arguably the best season of his career, averaging a career-high 21.9 points to go with 3.8 rebounds and 4.7 assists.

“Nathan is the utmost professional and since walking through the doors in the Heartland he has been a standard-setter within our group,” Phoenix General Manager of Basketball Operations Simon Mitchell said.

“He is a highly respected club leader, and to have him extend his time here is a great outcome for both Nathan and the club.

“It’s pleasing to get this done early so we can focus on the next period as a club, as both Nathan and the Phoenix chase our first championship.”

Sobey said it was an easy decision to recommit with the club, with the Phoenix very much in the mix for a tilt at the NBL26 Championship.

“Since walking into the club two years ago, I’ve been made to feel nothing but welcome by the front office and the fans on game day,” Sobey said.

“I’m excited to have at least another season of that. We have lofty goals as we chase a title, and I’m proud to be part of this group - but there’s still a lot of work to be done this season and beyond.”

Sobey has played 326 career NBL games across four clubs, starting out with the Cairns Taipans, before spending significant time in Adelaide and Brisbane.

He was an All-NBL First Team member in 2021.
