From last to lasting success: Weaver’s blueprint for Bullets revival

Brisbane Bullets fans have been starved of success, with it being seven seasons since their team has qualified for the post-season.

That number stretches to 19 years since the proud Bullets club has tasted the ultimate success of a championship.

But with the hire of Will Weaver as the club's President of Basketball Operations and Head Coach, things appear poised to change for the better for the Bullets, who finished last during the Hungry Jack's NBL26 Season with a 6-27 record.

Weaver arrives in Brisbane with a glittering international resume, including stops in the NBA and Europe, but one common trend is that he's worked with plenty of rebuilding clubs, including the Sydney Kings in NBL20.

"For whatever reason, my career has centred on builds," Weaver said to CODE Sports.

"The Sixers, the Nets, Houston and college life, it has always felt like I was being trained to know how you take something from the studs up to somewhere you dream about living. We're well and truly in that process at Brisbane right now.

"The process is going to be measured in years and not months or wins or any other short-term goal, but that is really what appeals to me professionally is to have this on my basketball gravestone one day if we do it right."

Since being appointed, Weaver has recruited Nate Hinton, Jaylin Williams, Arnas Velička, Max Mackinnon, Lat Mayen, Harry Rouhliadeff and Rio Bruton to the club, adding them to the returning core of Tyrell Harrison, Jacob Holt, Sam McDaniel, Taine Murray and Mitch Norton.

The 2019 G League Coach of the Year is confident this squad and his team can help return the Bullets to their prior glory days.

"You've got to fill the building up with really good people and players, and then you have to align your values and deliver on your promises. Creating the place where people can kill it is your job, whether that is with an NBA team in Philadelphia and it is called 'The Process' or you land in Brisbane and you are trying to sort out how to go from last to where we want it to end up."

The Bullets open their NBL27 campaign with a historic Open Air Game against New Zealand at Pat Rafter Arena on Tuesday, September 22.
