Travers chases NBA redemption, Boomers spot

At 24, Luke Travers has already achieved more than many players manage in their careers.

The talented forward is an NBL champion, was drafted into the NBA and made 24 appearances for the Cleveland Cavaliers across the past two seasons.

Despite all that, the Hungry Jack's NBL27 Season looms as the biggest of the Melbourne United star's career to date.

"This year is a big one for me if I want to get back to the NBA," Travers said to CODE Sports.

"Melbourne is a familiar spot; we've got a talented group and Jacob [Chance] and also Joe [Ingles] coming in was big. The role was also a big thing, and Jacob ticks all the right boxes in terms of how he gets the best out of me. He's someone who won't sugarcoat anything, and he'll tell me the truth, and that is the best part of it."

The other goal driving Travers, alongside a return to the NBA, is cracking the Australian Boomers squad for a major tournament like the 2027 FIBA World Cup or 2028 Olympics.

"I want to be right in there with them [at those tournaments]," Travers said.

"That's a lot of the guys' biggest goals and dreams, and that's where I want to be as well. I've been unlucky with the last couple [of windows] with some injuries and little niggles that I needed to take care of. This time I [was] fully healthy, so any time you get the chance to put your best foot forward in these qualification windows, you're always going to try to do that."

Travers and his Boomers easily accounted for Syria and Jordan during the recent FIBA World Cup Qualifiers in the Philippines.

He will now turn his attention to the CODE Sports NBL Blitz, where his United face Perth (Friday, September 4) and Illawarra (Sunday, September 6) before tipping off their NBL27 season on September 19 against Adelaide at John Cain Arena.
