'That place erupted': Velicka dishes out debut to remember

He arrived as one of the most intriguing and highly touted imports the Hungry Jack's NBL has seen in recent years, and Arnas Velicka wasted no time living up to the billing on debut for Brisbane on Tuesday.

The Lithuanian international dished out 14 assists to go with 23 points as the Bullets edged the Breakers by three at Pat Rafter Arena.

That assist tally is the most by any player on NBL debut, and the most by a Bullet in a 40-minute game.

Watching on from courtside, NBA champion and Olympic medallist Aron Baynes knew exactly what he was witnessing from his former club's new floor general.

"He made that place [Pat Rafter Arena] erupt and it was awesome seeing Will [Weaver]'s system out on the floor through Arnas," Baynes said on NBL Now, presented by CODE Sports.

"He let that ball just go from the very start of the game; he was finding anyone who was down in transition and he was kicking the ball ahead.

"He knows it's going to come back to him and everyone knows that he's going to try and find them if they get him the ball as well.

"It was a great style of play for their first hit-out and just getting into the system.

"It's not surprising to me that a guy of his calibre, playing in Europe, comes down here and is able to find his style of play straight away."

Of those 14 assists, eight went to big man Tyrell Harrison (22 points), as the two quickly established themselves as one of the most dangerous pick-and-roll combinations in the League.

"They're going to be right up there in the conversation [for best pick-and-roll combination]," Baynes added.

"We saw last year what Bryce [Cotton] and Isaac [Humphries] were able to do in their connection and how well they got their team going in quiet stretches.

"Tyrell's been waiting for a guy like [Arnas] to come into the League and play alongside him.

"Tyrell was his biggest cheerleader [on Tuesday]; anything he was doing, Tyrell was excited and high-fived [him].

"He knows which side his bread is buttered on right now and it's going to be a fun connection to see.

"I said it [on broadcast], they're going to be the number one connection in the League this year, and if Tuesday is anything to go by, it's going to be hard for any guard and big combination to keep up."

The Bullets will look to make it two wins on the trot when they host Illawarra on Friday night at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre from 7.30pm AEST, live on ESPN.
