Tick-tock: Perth's deadline dilemma

The Perth Wildcats weigh up a late point guard move as the signing deadline nears ahead of their Friday night showdown with Illawarra.
The Perth Wildcats are on the clock, with the deadline fast approaching.
By 6.35pm local time, when their game tips off on Friday night, they must lock in a new signing or back their current roster to take them to the title.
The Wildcats’ hunt for a new point guard has intensified, with young gun Jaron Rillie sidelined long term through injury and David Duke Jr already unavailable.
“I do not know,” commentator and WNBL star Anneli Maley pondered, when quizzed on whether Perth should make a last-minute move.
“They’ve had so much turnover and it’s like ‘do you really want to add another player in, or do you want to stick with what you’ve got?’. There’s two ways that you can look at it.”
Fox Sports reported on Thursday that the Wildcats were pursuing the signature of NBA veteran Brandon Knight, but have since said “no deal has eventuated”.
“Hopefully there’s a high-calibre point guard that could come in and gel everyone,” Maley continued.
“What I don’t think they need is another scoring point guard. They need a true point guard and if that’s what they’re going to get, then I think that would be a great idea.”
It looms as an incredibly busy Friday for John Rillie and GM of Basketball Operations Danny Mills, with Perth in action against Illawarra at RAC Arena.
The Wildcats currently sit fifth on the NBL standings with a 14-10 record.
