"They ain't getting sh** right": Davis not buying Kings snub

Reigning Championship Series MVP Kendric Davis has finally touched down in Australia, ready to help his Sydney Kings defend their NBL26 crown.

His delayed arrival, held up by passport issues, is just one of several hurdles the Kings have faced throughout the Hungry Jack's NBL27 off-season.

Forward Keli Leaupepe has been ruled out for a second consecutive season with an ACL injury, while the club has also weathered major roster turnover, losing championship-winners Tim Soares, Jaylin Galloway, Shaun Bruce and Bul Kuol.

Not a single expert polled in the League's 'Way Too Early Predictions' feature has tipped the reigning champions to go back-to-back.

That caught the attention of Davis, the reigning Championship Series MVP.

"Last year we had zero votes of winning a championship. We all thought we were going to win it, even at 3-5, so we're not looking at what we lost, we're looking at what we gained," Davis told foxsports.com.au.

"Who were they predicting to win the championship last year? Well they're not experts then if they ain't getting sh** right."

While the Kings' roster looks vastly different to last season, by adding the likes of Andrew Carr, Jayden Stone, Harry Wessels and Will Johnston, Davis sees no reason why his Harbour City side can't repeat last year's accomplishment.

"When you say we lost players, it means we took a step back. We don't think we took a step back, we just signed new players," Davis said.

"Everybody has got their own role. It'll be a different role this year. Just not with familiar faces. I think when they're not familiar faces and you don't know what to expect, you kind of doubt.

"But we have enough championship DNA, enough pedigree and the players that are coming in got enough talent to fill in whatever we need. We're coming into this season with the same expectations we had last year."

Davis and his Kings open their championship defence on Sunday, September 20 against Cairns at Afterpay Arena, live on ESPN from 5pm AEST.
