NBL great’s plea: "Stop complaining"

Two wins split first from ninth, but Derek Rucker says constant referee complaints are dragging down a booming NBL season.

Player conduct towards referees is back in the spotlight after Round 6, and former NBL MVP Derek Rucker didn’t mince words.
“Stop b*****g,” he said on Moments that Mattered, presented by Mitsubishi Pajero.
Rucker’s comments came directly after the Melbourne United and Sydney Kings game, where both Sam Waardenburg and Xavier Cooks were given technical fouls for venting frustration with a call.
“I think the players have got to pull their heads in and get it together,” he added.
“Stop complaining about everything that’s going on. Just play basketball.
“It’s draining to watch it. It’s not good television. Just play basketball.
“We’re in one of the best leagues in the world and one of the best countries in the world.”
While player frustration is inevitable, there has been a consistent dialogue around both players and coaches and the way they communicate with referees this season.
That’s a distraction from what has otherwise been one of the most compelling starts to a season in recent memory. The League has rarely been tighter, with just two wins separating first from ninth on the ladder, while the likes of Bryce Cotton, Cole Anthony, Will Magnay and Taran Armstrong have been putting on a show week in, week out.
“You should be so grateful to have the opportunity to play in this league that is absolutely booming,” Rucker said.
“Enjoy it, man. Play the game.”
