Kings impress in Blitz win over Breakers

Makuach Maluach caught fire early, Jayden Stone was spectacular and Torrey Craig is warming up nicely with the Sydney Kings scoring the 95-74 win at the CODE Sports NBL Blitz over the New Zealand Breakers.

It was a second game already at the Blitz in Bendigo for the Kings following Wednesday's loss to the South East Melbourne Phoenix with them welcoming back championship veteran duo Matthew Dellavedova and Torrey Craig.

Championship Series MVP Kendric Davis is still yet to arrive in the country for NBL27 but the Breakers were missing Sam Mennenga, Izayah Le'Afa and former King Kouat Noi.

Maluach then had a flying start for Sydney with 12 points in the first quarter to set the tone and he was up to 17 already by half-time before finishing with 22 points on 4/6 shooting from the outside.

Jayden Stone is fresh into the NBL out of the University of Missouri and he got out to run to throw down two spectacular dunks on his way to 12 points, seven rebounds and two steals.

Then there's Craig who was the ideal late addition to Sydney's championship run last season, but now is here from the start in NBL27. He ended up with 14 points, four rebounds and three assists.

With Sydney having already got a run under their belts on Wednesday, they got the better of the start against the Breakers with 30 points to 24 in the first quarter on the back of shooting 12/17 from the field and 5/6 from deep to the 8/15 and 3/7 to New Zealand.

Maluach added another five points in the second quarter to already have 17 by half-time for the Kings with the defending champions leading 51-44 on 20/38 shooting from the floor to the 16/32 from the Breakers who were as usual led by 10 points from Parker Jackson-Cartwright.

Sydney then outscored New Zealand 20 points to 10 in the third quarter on 8/21 shooting from the floor to just 4/17 for the Breakers to extend their advantage to 71-54 by three quarter-time.

It was another 24 points to 20 in the last frame for the Kings to complete the 21-point victory on the back of putting up an extra 10 shot attempts on the back of forcing the Breakers into 15 turnovers while having just eight themselves even without point guard Kendric Davis.

On top of what Makuach Maluach, Torrey Craig and Jayden Stone provided for the Kings, Will Johnston had nine points and two assists with 3/5 three-point shooting on the back of a strong NBL1 East season with the Hornsby Ku-Ring-Gai Spiders.

Another player out of the NBL1 East, Lachie Bofinger, also showed encouraging signs after helping the Norths Bears to the championship with seven points and three rebounds with Andrew Carr adding seven points, eight rebounds and three assists, and Jason Spurgin six points, six boards and two assists.

It was a first official hit out ahead of NBL27 for the Breakers with Parker Jackson-Cartwright delivering 15 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

Carlin Davison added 11 points, three rebounds and two assists, Josiah-Jordan James 11 points and five boards, Charles Bediko nine points and six rebounds, DJ Vasiljevic eight points and four boards, and 392-game NBL veteran Reuben Te Rangi eight points and two rebounds.
