Mac to the future: United signing puts patience over pressure

The NBL's 2024 Most Improved Player is on his way to Melbourne, with Sean Macdonald signing with United on a three-year deal.

A champion with the Tasmania JackJumpers just two seasons ago, Macdonald will add another key piece to a new-look Melbourne roster.

Currently recovering from an ACL injury, Macdonald will be United's Nominated Replacement Player for the Hungry Jack's NBL27 Season, before entering the full roster in the second and third years of his deal.

"I'm stoked to be joining United," the 26-year-old said.

"It's really awesome knowing that a club's invested in me as a player long term and think highly of the player that I am and what I'll return to be.

"I think the nature of this contract is beneficial, and it doesn't put any time pressure on me to be back sooner than I should be. It's going to be really great to lock in on the process day-by-day, get more confident, and take my time getting back to full strength."

Macdonald grew up in Melbourne, but enjoyed great success in Tasmania before an unfortunate run of injuries in the past two seasons.

"The goal is that I'll be a better athlete when I come back than I was before these injuries," he said.

"I'm just keen to put together a few good seasons of really good basketball, refine my skills and work on some new things to be more effective on the court."

United High Performance Manager Steve McAdam said Macdonald was making positive strides on the comeback trail from injury.

"Sean has had really positive medical reports and is already in a good spot with his rehabilitation," McAdam said.

"Our High Performance team can now use the next few months to build off the foundation of work he's already put in and progress him back to competitive basketball."

Head Coach Jacob Chance was full of praise for the talented guard.

"To bring someone of Sean's character, the human being that both he and his fiancé Elle are, is a huge addition to our club for the long-term future," he said.

"Bringing Sean back to Melbourne was a massive focus. To have a scenario like this where he's picked us as his best environment to come in and trust our medical staff and trust our coaching staff to get him back to 100% is great.

"There's no pressure on him to rush his rehab. He can take all the time he needs to get back on the court in the best condition possible."
