Men's Gangurrus claim silver in Glasgow

The Australian Gangurrus men fell heartbreakingly short of gold at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games despite 12 points in the Gold Medal Game from Jonah Antonio with England prevailing 19-17.

The 3x3 tournament at the 2026 Commonwealth Games wrapped up on Wednesday night Glasgow time and Australia had booked their place in the Gold Medal Game by having gone through undefeated up to that point.

That included a 21-14 win in the semi-final earlier on Wednesday against the host nation Scotland to set up the battle for gold with England. It was England who ended up winning by two points with the Gangurrus finishing with silver.

Meanwhile, the Australian women ended up winning gold while the wheelchair men also won gold and the wheelchair women won bronze meaning all four Australian teams in the tournament came away with a medal.

The final day's action at the 3x3 tournament in Glasgow got underway with the semi finals and that saw Australia putting their undefeated record on the line against Scotland having beaten the host nation 21-14 during the preliminary stage.

The spot in the Gold Medal Game went on the line and it was Jonah Antonio who landed a two-pointer to give Australia the 7-5 lead after less than three minutes before he hit another and then so did Jesse Wagstaff for the 12-7 advantage.

The Perth Wildcats games record holder and six-time NBL champion then hit another from the outside to give the Gangurrus the 15-8 lead which they ended up converting into the 21-14 victory with Sam McDaniel wrapping up the win also hitting a two-pointer.

The Gangurrus finished the semi-final remaining undefeated so far in Glasgow with Brisbane Bullets 156-game NBL veteran McDaniel ending up with 10 points and five rebounds on 8/12 shooting.

Ahead of returning home for his NBL1 West finals campaign at the East Perth Eagles, Antonio had six points with 3/6 two-point shooting while Wagstaff contributed four points on 2/3 from the outside and Jarred Bairstow a point, an assist and a drive.

That led into the Gold Medal Game with Australia and England facing off for the first time in Glasgow and the Gangurrus went up 5-3 with Antonio hitting from the outside after four minutes.

McDaniel made that a 6-3 advantage before Australia were still leading 10-8 when McDaniel scored again but that would be their last lead of the match up.

England scored six of the next eight points but the Gangurrus did level scores once more at 14-14 thanks to a basket from Antonio with two minutes on the clock.

For the first time all tournament Australia were part of a game where time ran out before a team got to the 21 points after a dramatic finish with Antonio connecting at the foul line with 38 seconds left before Bairstow missed a shot to tie scores after an Antonio offensive rebound.

Then down two, the Gangurrus had one last chance before the buzzer to force overtime but couldn’t get a shot up to end up finishing with silver and England winning gold with the 19-17 victory.

Antonio ended the Gold Medal Game with 12 points and four rebounds with 3/6 shooting from the outside with McDaniel adding four points and four rebounds, Bairstow one point and Wagstaff five rebounds and an assist.

Meanwhile in the women's 3x3 tournament, the Gangurrus completed their undefeated time in Glasgow firstly beating Jamaica 21-8 in the semi-final and defeating Uganda 21-11 in the Gold Medal Game.

Marena Whittle starred in the Gold Medal triumph with 15 points, seven rebounds and two assists with Lara McSpadden adding four points and Amy Atwell two with Emma Clarke unable to play.

The men's wheelchair team also won gold for Australia with the Wombats prevailing 19-13 against England having earlier defeated Scotland 19-12 in the semi finals.

In the Gold Medal Game, Eithen Leard had 10 points and three rebounds with Tom O'Neill-Thorne adding five points, nine rebounds and four assists, and Tomas Klein three points and two boards.

And for the women's wheelchair team, Australia claimed bronze with the 19-17 win against Canada having earlier lost the semi-final to Scotland 15-12.

In the Bronze Medal Game, Georgia Munro-Cook wrapped up her dominant tournament with another 12 points, four rebounds and three assists with 12/17 shooting.
