Trailblazer: The untold story of the NBL's first European import

Before Europeans became a regular part of the NBL, one player paved the way.

In 1993, Lithuanian Olympian Rimas Kurtinaitis became the first European-born import in League history, signing with the newly formed Townsville Suns and opening the door for a new era of international recruitment.

Already 33 years old, Kurtinaitis arrived with an elite résumé that included stints with CSKA Moscow, Žalgiris Kaunas, and clubs in Germany, bringing a level of international pedigree the NBL had rarely seen.

He also owned one of basketball's most unique distinctions, becoming the only player ever to compete in the NBA Three-Point Contest without being on an NBA roster

He didn't just make history by arriving, he starred. Kurtinaitis averaged 24.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game, quickly becoming a cult hero in Townsville and one of the League's premier scorers.

More than three decades later, two other Lithuanians have followed in his footsteps in the NBL in former New Zealand Breakers Next Star Mantas Rubštavičius and newly signed Brisbane Bullets point guard Arnas Velička.

His NBL career lasted just one season before he departed for Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid, but his impact was lasting.

Kurtinaitis proved European talent could thrive in Australia, helping reshape the league's approach to recruiting imports for years to come.
