Aussies Abroad: Hawks' streak ends despite Daniels' heroics

Wednesday, November 19, 2025

Australian Boomer Dyson Daniels tallied 12 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists in Atlanta's defeat to Detroit.

Dyson Daniels brought the Atlanta Hawks within one point of the NBA's form team in the fourth quarter but the Australian guard could not stop the Detroit Pistons holding on for a 120-112 win, their 11th on the trot.

Without injured talisman Trae Young, the Hawks trailed the eastern conference leaders by as many as 19 points in the second quarter before surging late on Wednesday afternoon (AEDT).

Daniels had the tough assignment of marking up on Cade Cunningham in the former top draft pick's first game back from a minor hip injury, and the Pistons guard was on song early.

But Daniels, known for his defensive power, came up with some big offensive plays of his own during a 14-2 run that had the Hawks within reach of their first lead.

Daniels (12 points, nine rebounds, six assists) put up a floater to cut the deficit to six points with around nine minutes to play before Onyeka Okongwu (21 points) found him slicing through traffic for another basket.

That second shot from Daniels left the Pistons' advantage at one point and forced the visitors to call a timeout with a little less than seven minutes on the clock.

But the Hawks failed to come up with points on five consecutive offensive possessions down the stretch and renowned clutch player Cunningham (25 points, 10 assists) made them pay.

"We're competing, we're running, we're doing the things we need to do. Getting in a game like this, there's no moral victories in that, there's an opportunity to learn. That's what we're going to try to do," Hawks coach Quin Snyder said.

"(But) taking care of the ball is something certainly we need to keep focus on."

Detroit (13-2) snapped the Hawks' five game winning run and are now on their first 11 game streak since 2008.

If they beat the Milwaukee Bucks and conference battlers Indiana Pacers in their next two games, the Pistons will equal their franchise record of 13 consecutive wins on Tuesday (AEDT).

Elsewhere, Steph Curry put up 34 points and nine assists but could not prevent the Golden State Warriors falling 121-113 to the Orlando Magic.

Orlando led by 15 points during the second quarter before Curry closed the half with three triples and two free throws in the final four minutes to pull Golden State seven at halftime.

But after bursting down the lane for a lay up late in the third quarter that left the Warriors down by 10, Curry went almost 12 minutes without a point and the Magic got home.

In New York, the Boston Celtics handed the battling Brooklyn Nets their 12th loss from 14 starts this season, Jaylen Brown top scoring for the visitors with 29 points.
