‘Bring him back’: Rucker urges Breakers to re-sign star

Derek Rucker backs the New Zealand Breakers to keep their core together for NBL27, with Izaiah Brockington central to their future plans.

Derek Rucker has urged the New Zealand Breakers to “run it back” with their NBL26 core, backing the squad to take another step forward next season.

While the Breakers missed the Finals, they still secured some valuable silverware by claiming the Ignite Cup trophy last Sunday, underlining the potential within the group.

According to Rucker, the foundations are firmly in place for further growth in NBL27.

“Let’s try and run it back with the vast majority of this squad,” Rucker said on Moments That Mattered.

A major reason for his optimism is import Izaiah Brockington, who surged late in the campaign and became a driving force when the team was at its best.

“This guy performed sensationally in the back half of the season,” Rucker said.

“Brockington was outstanding (in the Ignite Cup Final) … they’ve got to stitch Brockington up and bring coach Kop (Petteri Koponen) back.

“He (Brockington) figured it out. He worked out a way to find out how to score the basketball.

“I think at times earlier in the season he was trying to do too much, but now to close out this season, the Ignite Cup season, he’s found the perfect groove.

“I’ll be surprised if they don’t bring him back.”

However, retaining the 26-year-old may not be straightforward.

“New Zealand might be challenge, because I would think Brockington’s value in the open global basketball market has significantly increased,” Rucker added.

The Breakers finished with a 13-20 record, but their Ignite Cup triumph, along with a Code Sports NBL Blitz title earlier in the year, showed they can compete with the League’s best when at full strength.

Parker Jackson-Cartwright is already locked in for next season, though the club faces key discussions with the likes of Sam Mennenga, Carlin Davison and of course, Brockington.

At this stage, only Jackson-Cartwright, Reuben Te Rangi and Izayah Le’Afa are contracted for NBL27.

Taylor Britt and Max Darling both have options on their deals for next year.
