He's one of the all-time greats of Australian basketball, and even at 38, Patty Mills shows no signs of slowing down.

Just a month ago, Mills torched Barcelona for 36 points playing for La Laguna Tenerife. Now attention turns to a bigger question: can he suit up for a fourth FIBA World Cup next year in Qatar?

Boomers great Andrew Gaze believes Mills would likely need to embrace a different role on the team, with the next generation ready to shine, but "supports selecting Patty based on the form that I've seen."

"With planning and a short preparation to train together ahead of the World Cup next August I think we're at a point where a decision has to be made about Patty," Gaze told Code Sports.

"I would be consulting him if he wants to play and wants to play a role that would be different to the past, but he is clearly showing from his time in Spain that he can still play at a very high level.

"But given Patty's long history with the Boomers he might be at a point where he doesn't want to commit himself to that (new) role."

Mills signed with LDLC ASVEL last week, linking back up with former San Antonio teammate Tony Parker, who now serves as the French club's coach and president.

With a wave of exciting young Australian talent emerging, Gaze says the decision on Mills' Boomers future is a tricky one all round.
