Can Galloway bring Boomers brilliance to Sydney?

Former Boomer Aron Baynes says Jaylin Galloway must bring the confidence he showed with the Boomers back to the Sydney Kings

Jaylin Galloway has been challenged to carry his impressive international form into his return to the Sydney Kings after the FIBA Break.

The 22-year-old is a super talent and averaged 15.7 points a game, including shooting 64 per cent from three during the FIBA Asia Cup, continuing that brilliance against New Zealand in a World Cup Qualifier on Friday with 19 points.

But his numbers in the NBL do not quite match those of his recent appearances with the Boomers.

Across the NBL26 season, Galloway has averaged 8.8 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal, in 21 minutes a game.

“Just seeing what Jaylin was able to do … he hasn’t been that player for Sydney this year,” former NBA champion Aron Baynes said on NBL Now.

“It’s great to be able to see him come out and get back to that … I think he’s got to find that same confidence when he puts on the Kings uniform.”

Pressed on how Galloway can match his international output in the NBL, Baynes said it goes beyond simply settling into the Kings' system.

“Confidence goes a long way and I’m sure Deano (Dean Vickerman) was in his ear saying ‘we need you to be the player you were and get back to that [the Asia Cup form]’,” he said.

“He had the confidence of his teammates, confidence of his coach. It goes a long way.

“Sydney has been up and down a number of times this year and Xave (Xavier Cooks) has really been what they’ve been trying to focus on, getting him back to where he needs to for them to go a long way.

“Once Xave’s getting going, they’ll start getting a bit more confidence in Jaylin.”

Australia and New Zealand face off again on Monday in Wellington, after the Boomers won a thrilling opening game by five points in Hobart.

Galloway is expected to play a huge part in the Kings’ push towards the Finals, with Brian Goorjian’s team winning four straight games before a slip-up against Tasmania on the eve of the FIBA Break.

He overcame a serious shoulder injury during the off-season to return fighting fit for the NBL26 campaign.

The Hungry Jack’s NBL Season resumes on Wednesday when Galloway and the Sydney Kings take on New Zealand in an Ignite Cup clash.
