Brisbane in tune with one direction

Chris Anstey believes new Bullets coach Will Weaver can bring the direction Brisbane has been missing.

There’s a new dawn in Brisbane and Bullets fans have reason to be excited about the future, following the announcement of Will Weaver as Head Coach this week.

“They’ve got direction and it’s great,” three-time NBL champion Chris Anstey said on NBL Now.

“He knows the league. He's got very direct ties to the NBA. He's going to oversee both recruitment and the coaching. For where the club's been with an oversight of recruitment, I think that part is just as important as the coaching element.”

The Bullets haven’t made the post-season in well over a decade and through countless coaching changes the stability and direction of the club have understandably been questioned.

Weaver’s name has been a constant topic every off-season since his tenure with the Sydney Kings, and now the 42-year-old returns to Australia to take on a different challenge.

“The way that town became a Bullets town years back and hasn't stopped being a Bullets town, despite the incredible things that go on across sport and everything else in southeast Queensland, that part is highly appealing,” Weaver said on NBL Now.

“The leadership that they have is really clear-minded about what they're trying to achieve and very direct. They haven't got it right and they're trying to get it right.

“They want some help and I'm quite confident that I can bring a very particular set of skills … and people in Brisbane shouldn't have had to watch the basketball team they watched over the past few years.

“It's anything but easy. But take care of the fundamentals, treat people great, expect a lot of them, coach it, demand it, then players deliver it and everybody gets rewarded.”

While Weaver has already jumped straight into his new role, meeting the current rostered players and beginning his recruitment of others, he has a simple message for the fans.

“Now’s your chance to jump on board,” he said.

“We’re coming to mean it and it’s going to be hard work. But the rocket fuel that we need is in the support of the people that haven’t stopped caring about the team and have kept it a Bullets town all these years.”
