Roth reveals succession vision for JackJumpers

Tasmania coach Scott Roth says he's open to remaining with the JackJumpers beyond his current contract, which expires at the end of the Hungry Jack’s NBL27 Season.

While Roth admits he is approaching the twilight of his coaching career, he remains committed to guiding the club through a period of transition and doing what is best for the JackJumpers’ future.

Speaking on SEN Tasmania, the NBL24 championship-winning coach discussed what could come next.

“I had some conversations with Ben Harrison (ownership group) and the one thing that’s transpired that I wasn’t anticipating is over the last year there’s been a lot of transition with the JackJumpers, a lot of front office movement, the new owner, add the Jewels (WNBL team), moving to a high performance centre,” he said.

“There’s a lot of transition that still is going to take another year or so for it to settle its way down.

“In that process if I’m lucky enough to stay another year or two to stabilise some of that stuff ... so it’s not, season’s over in six months and now they’re looking for another coach, and now there’s other transitional things.

“We’ll see how it goes here in the next few weeks and if I can stay another year or two, I’ll definitely do that for them.”

Roth has coached the JackJumpers throughout their first five seasons in the competition, leading them to four Finals campaigns and a dream Championship triumph just two seasons ago.

Alongside the changes taking place at the club, he also pointed to the arrival of the Tasmania Devils’ AFL team as another period of transition for the state and backed the next generation of coaches waiting in the wings.

“We obviously have to very aware of the Devils coming in behind us and how we go through our marketing plans and our things that we need to get done,” Roth said.

“I’m getting close to obviously finishing my coaching career.

“I’d love for this transition to one of my assistant coaches. They deserve to have a hell of a chance at this job and that will hopefully be part of the transition period.

“Ultimately we start today with the grit and grind of what we do and Defend the Island and get back after it and things will work itself out.

“I’ve been very fortunate to be sitting in this position to just be lucky enough to coach this team.”

Roth boasts a winning record of close to 52 per cent across his tenure, an impressive achievement with a club built from the ground up.
