The "mastermind" leading Kings' charge

NBL champion Pete Hooley believe Sydney’s Kendric Davis is “an absolute mastermind in the point guard position”.
The Kendric Davis MVP train continues to gain momentum after yet another incredible performance for the Sydney Kings on Sunday.
The American point guard put up 30 points and 10 assists, marking the ninth-straight fixture in which the 26-year-old has scored 20+ points in a game.
While the stat line was once again impressive, it was other parts of his game that impressed NBL commentator Pete Hooley.
“He's just too smart because he might have had Kristian Doolittle on him for a little bit, but whenever that happened, he'd just call a ball screen, get a switch and then get the defender he wants and go to work,” Hooley said on Monday’s episode of NBL Overtime.
“He's an absolute mastermind in the point guard position.
“It's funny because we go back to the start of the season, and we thought he was going play off the ball.
“[They need to] keep the ball in his hands, he had 30 and 10 once again [on Sunday], and whenever he has to go and score the ball, he's going do it super efficiently.
“He just manipulates the defence with ease, he is a genuine superstar.”
NBL champion Hooley doubled down on that, commenting on the growth in maturity of Davis from his first season in the NBL with Adelaide.
“We'll talk about the stats, the MVP race, but him picking his moments is so impressive,” Hooley said.
“I'll go back to the Cairns game. He had a jump shot to start the game, and then he got to the exact same spot twice and tried to feed [Tim] Soares, tried to feed [Xavier] Cooks to get them going. They both couldn't score the ball, so he started ticking the scoreboard over [himself].
“He knows how to manipulate a game right now better than anybody else. He is just picking everybody apart.”
Kendric Davis is a $475,600 guard in the NBL’s official fantasy game, Beat The Coach, presented by Choice Hotels. Take on Damon Lowery and Beat the Coach in any round of the NBL26 Season and you’ll receive an entry into the end-of-season $10,000 prize draw, including $5,000 cash and $5,000 in Choice Hotels™ gift vouchers. Fellow panellist Damon Lowery echoed Hooley’s sentiments, saying the import’s improvement under coach Brian Goorjian has impressed him.
“That guy needs to have the ball in his hands because now he’s making great decisions,” Lowery said.
“He’s not trying to score every time down the floor; he knows when it’s time to get his teammates involved, and he loves this group of teammates.
“Then if it comes down to one-on-one, you can forget it, you’re not guarding him one-on-one.”
The Kings, who have won 10 straight games, will look to lock up the regular season championship on Friday night when they travel to Brisbane to take on the Bullets.
That Round 22 fixture tips off at 7.30pm AEDT, live on ESPN.
