Williams urges NBA to unlock Cheatham code

Zylan Cheatham’s dominant NBL26 campaign has sparked strong calls from former NBA centre Alan Williams for the Adelaide forward to be given a true chance at the NBA level.
Former NBA and NBL big man Alan Williams has called for Adelaide star Zylan Cheatham to be given a genuine opportunity in the NBA.
The Adelaide 36ers forward has been in outstanding form, highlighted by his 27-point, 14-rebound performance against Tasmania, prompting fresh calls for a shot in the United States.
“I’m hoping the next step is the NBA for him,” Williams told Fox Sports.
“There’s no reason in my opinion or my eyes that he shouldn’t be playing in the NBA right now. Hopefully, he keeps pushing, keeps working, and gets that opportunity. He deserves a real shot.”
Cheatham has averaged more than a double-double across NBL26, posting 11.1 points and 10.6 rebounds per game, excelling alongside the likes of Bryce Cotton and Isaac Humphries in an Adelaide team that looks bound for Finals.
His numbers have lifted again in the past month as the 36ers begin to settle into their rhythm.
Like Cheatham, Williams grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, and described the 30-year-old as “my little brother”, recalling his impact throughout high school.
“(He is) just a straight beast, and we stayed in contact all through college,” Williams said.
“Now, we even have the same professional trainer. In the off-season, we are in the gym together two or three times a week. That is my guy.
“He is an extremely cerebral player and a great teammate.
“That mic’d up session the NBL did with him this season was a perfect example of who he is, not just as a competitor but as a person.
“He is supportive, vocal, and works his butt off. He has had different situations throughout his career, but I think being in Adelaide is the best thing for him. It is giving him and everyone else a real chance to see what he can do.”
Cheatham has previously played five NBA games between 2019-2022, lining up for the New Orleans Pelicans and Utah Jazz.
The 36ers host Illawarra on Wednesday night at home, live on ESPN from 7.30pm AEDT.
