Darryl McDonald believes Tyrell Harrison has what it takes to become the NBL’s best centre.

Brisbane Bullets big man Tyrell Harrison has the potential to be the best centre in the NBL. He just does not realise it yet.

Harrison's heroics on Saturday night helped Brisbane claw back from a 17 point deficit and surge to a four-point lead with just five minutes remaining against Melbourne United.

The Bullets went cold from there, allowing Melbourne to close out a 92-87 win.

But Harrison's 23 point, 11 rebound performance was the standout of the night, further highlighting the upside of the 214-centimetre powerhouse.

The 26 year old is averaging career-highs in points (16), rebounds (9.8) and blocks (1.5) this season, and even knocked down a buzzer beating three pointer against United.

Bullets caretaker coach Darryl McDonald, who is pushing for the permanent role, believes Harrison still has another level to unlock.

"Coming into the season, the plan was to get him to be the best centre in the league, like dominate your position," McDonald said of Harrison, who was born in Australia but has chosen to represent New Zealand due to his father's heritage.

"He's had some really, really good ones, and he's had some games that haven't been so good.

"I don't think he knows how good he can be, but I've been telling him this for two years.

"I tell him, 'You can be the best centre in the league, but it's got to be something that you want to do, and you've actually got to crave it.'

"Like you've got to want to come in every day and get your work, and you've got to want to dominate these games.

"I just think there's a part of him that I don't think sees it, but we do. The coaches see it."

As for Harrison's reaction when told he could be the best in the league?

"He gives you a cheeky little smile," McDonald said.

"He's actually a funny dude."

Brisbane have also signed former South East Melbourne guard Hunter Maldonado for the remainder of the season, with the American expected to help Harrison reach greater heights.

"I think Maldonado coming in is going to help that, because he's a good pick and roll player, like he can get Ty easy buckets," McDonald said.

"Because right now, Ty has to work for everything."

If Maldonado receives clearance in time, he will suit up for Brisbane in Tuesday night's clash with the Sydney Kings.

The Bullets sit at 6-15, but remain within striking distance of sixth placed Tasmania (9-12) in the race for a play-in berth.
