The Illawarra Hawks have unveiled the signing of prolific scorer QJ Peterson.
The Illawarra Hawks have filled their vacant import spot, securing the signature of American point guard QJ Peterson.
The reigning champions have struggled in the early part of the season following the departure of star guard Trey Kell III, Will Hickey missing games through injury, and the early exit of JaQuori McLaughlin.
The reigning champions confirmed on Thursday the 31-year-old, who most recently played in China with Xinjiang Flying Tigers, has agreed to a deal for the remainder of the Hungry Jack’s NBL26 Season.
Peterson, who has been training with the Hawks while awaiting international clearance to suit up, is excited to join the foundation club.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to play in the NBL. It’s a tough, respected league, and I’m ready to compete,” Peterson said.
"The Hawks have a strong culture and passionate fans, and I’m looking forward to being part of that energy and helping this team win games.”
Peterson has been a prolific scorer across the world throughout his professional career, averaging 20.7 points a game and almost 40 per cent from the three-point line this season.
He has played in Puerto Rico, Turkey, Denmark and Ukraine in recent years.
Hawks general manager of basketball, Mat Campbell, believes that skillset and experience will be massive for the reigning champions.
“Q.J. is a proven scorer and competitor who can create opportunities and lift the energy of those around him,” Campbell said.
“He’s played at a high level all over the world, and his experience and leadership will be invaluable for our younger players. We’re thrilled to welcome him to the Illawarra and can’t wait for fans to see what he brings to the floor.”
The Hawks host New Zealand on Friday night, which will mark championship hero William Hickey's first game of the season, after being sidelined with an eye injury.
The Indigenous Round clash tips off at 7.30pm AEDT, live on ESPN.
