North-West Tasmanian talent Taran Armstrong made history on Wednesday, becoming the first-ever born-and-bred Tasmanian to sign as a rostered player with the JackJumpers.

The 24-year-old point guard from Burnie, who most recently played with Dubai Basketball, joins the JackJumpers on a two-year deal, with there being an option on the second year.

“When I was reflecting on what I needed next in my career, I knew I wanted to go to a place where I could be the best version of myself, and that’s here with the JackJumpers,” Armstrong said.

“I really believe in my ability, but I’m far from a finished product, and that’s what I’m excited for – the JackJumpers are nationally renowned for their player development.

“To have all the pieces fall into place and to be able to play for my home state is such a blessing.

“I can’t imagine what it’s going to be like playing in front of my home crowd, with familiar faces watching, but I know that I can’t wait for it.”

JackJumpers General Manager of Basketball Operations Darren Smith said it was a monumental moment for Armstrong and the JackJumpers, with both aspiring to this moment since the team’s inception five years ago.

“It’s an exciting time for Tasmania,” Smith said.

“We not only have home-grown talent on the court, but also one of the most exciting Australians in the league right now, too.

“Taran is really crafty with the ball; he’s unpredictable, we’ve never seen a point guard quite like him. He’s really one of the most exciting signatures the JackJumpers have ever had.”

Tasmania Head Coach Scott Roth said Armstrong would have an enormous impact on Tasmania.

“To have home-grown talent of the calibre of Taran on the court in a JackJumpers’ jersey is so exciting,” Roth said.

“Armstrong is exactly what the JackJumpers are all about, the grit and grind and defending the island.

“We’ve obviously followed him for many years, and have been hopeful that at some point he would want to come back and play for us.

“Now, the timing is right, the impact he’s going to have on our team and state is incredible – Taran will show Tassie kids what’s possible.

“Personally, I’m excited to coach him, and to have a high-level point such as Taran will make the game easier for our players, and I’m sure they will love playing with him.”

Armstrong joins a JackJumpers roster of Will Magnay, Josh Bannan, Nick Marshall, Sean Macdonald, Ben Ayre, Kobe Williamson and Archie Woodhill as rostered players for the Hungry Jack’s NBL27 Season.
