Brisbane Bullets CEO Mal Watts admits the club "got it wrong" in appointing Stu Lash as head coach.

The Brisbane Bullets are ramping up their search for a new head coach, moving on Stu Lash this week after just 18 games at the helm.

In an interview with 10 News Brisbane, Bullets CEO Mal Watts admitted the club "got it wrong" in hiring Lash, who came into the job with no coaching experience.

"We went down a route that at the time was well intentioned, but it hasn't worked out," Watts said.

"In this industry, we're judged on performance and the performances this year have been poor.

"We got it wrong but we don't give up. It's really what we do now.

"I think this will be a really significant moment in time that we get it right and it's the last piece of the puzzle."

As it stands, the Bullets have appointed assistant Darryl McDonald as the new interim head coach.

But Watts says the club is well advanced in finding their new coach.

"The process is to get it right and we're deep into that," Watts said.

"We're in discussions. We have been in discussions for a period now and they're getting quite close."

A few names have been thrown about as potential successors, with three-time winner Chris Anstey throwing his support behind one of the competition's most successful mentors.

"When you go on a global search for head coach and end up with a guy who's never been a head coach, it concerns you a little bit," Anstey said on NBL Now.

"The names I've heard are Chase Buford and Trevor Gleeson, both with a lot of coaching experience and both with coaching experience here in Australia.

"I don't think after what's happened with Stu Lash you can go another unproven head coach.

"I think the most highly credentialed proven head coach, if he would want it and if you can afford him, is Trevor Gleeson."

Brisbane travel to John Cain Arena on Saturday to play South East Melbourne during their annual Open Air Game.

The Round 13 fixture tips off at 8pm AEDT, live on ESPN.
