Illawarra look to build momentum after a statement win in Perth as Will Hickey returns and QJ Peterson makes his debut against the Breakers.

For all the challenges the Illawarra Hawks have faced in the early part of the season, it’s hard to believe that a win on Friday night would put them firmly back in the top six.

Injuries to key players and significant changes across their roster have led to talk of a possible Championship hangover, but Justin Tatum’s team could just be starting to bring things together.

After a big win against Perth, the return of Will Hickey and the debut of import QJ Peterson on Friday night make things look a lot brighter for the Hawks.

“It’s a really important game. I think they’re feeling better about themselves, I think they’re understanding each other better,” two-time MVP Chris Anstey said on NBL Now, ahead of Illawarra’s clash with New Zealand.

“If you asked me the result of this game before the start of the season, I’d tell you that Illawarra win by 15. I don’t think they’re there yet, but I think Illawarra will find a way to get this one done.”

Anstey said the inclusion of two key guards will help the Hawks immensely.

“He (Peterson) needs to move the ball and give Tyler Harvey the ability to play off the ball more often and be a scorer the second time he touches it, have the ball move before it hits Tyler’s hands,” he continued.

“I just think if you can get Will Hickey back to the bench and driving that bench unit, he’s been really successful in that role. The depth of talent across that entire 40 minutes improves for Illawarra.

“Two backcourt players help their depth and I think the sheer weight of numbers improves the guys around them.”

Anstey believes Illawarra will take great confidence from its thrilling win over the Wildcats, made even more significant given the game was played in enemy territory.

“You saw what it meant for Illawarra to get the win in Perth, but for JaVale McGee himself to hit that game-winning free throw was significant,” he added.

“We’ve spoken about him a number of times, his level of ability, his level of talent. I think what Illawarra need to find is whether that level of talent can contribute to consistent winning.”

McGee has averaged career-high numbers this year, putting up 22.7 points, 10.7 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game across his first six appearances.

He’ll face a big task against Breakers star Sam Mennenga on Friday night, with tip-off at 7.30pm AEDT, live on ESPN.
