“Unacceptable”: Roth calls out captain

Scott Roth didn’t hold back after Will Magnay’s ejection, delivering a stern post-game message to his captain.

Will Magnay's ejection didn’t end up costing the Tasmania JackJumpers, but it had the potential to and coach Scott Roth let him know in no uncertain terms how unacceptable it was.

It was a terrific night for the JackJumpers on Wednesday, as they returned to MyState Bank Arena for the first time in a month to beat the Sydney Kings 86-70.

But Magnay's exit from the game after an unsportsmanlike foul and a technical foul caught the ire of his coach.

"He opened his mouth and I just had a conversation with him in the locker room, because it was unacceptable. He put us in a bind already being short players and we just have to move on, but he's learned a hard lesson," Roth said.

"I am relieved, but I did have some choice words for Will while the players were out there stretching just because of the importance of him.

"He's still quite young and now he's been thrown into this role as the leader of our team, the captain, and he was captain of the Boomers of this recent round with FIBA with those guys too.

"The responsibility that comes with that, I made it well known to him of what I expect from him. He was quite emotional about that and quite upset that it got to the point where he ended up getting ejected.

"Those are growth moments and it was unacceptable, but we have to move on and the guys rallied around him in the locker room to show him some love. I had my say and we'll move on."

The undermanned JackJumpers continued their impressive start to the season with a dominant win over Sydney, moving to fourth on the NBL standings with four wins from six games, including three victories away from home.
