Why Wells believes 36ers' best is still to come

Adelaide coach Mike Wells believes Saturday’s win over Melbourne was ‘validating’ for all the hard work his group has been putting in.
From the outside looking in, Saturday’s win by the Adelaide 36ers over Melbourne United was just another victory.
But to those within the four walls at the 36ers, it was an extremely important triumph.
Five-time MVP Bryce Cotton labelled it a “huge morale boost”, while coach Mike Wells called it a ‘validating’ victory his team needed.
“It was a really important [win],” Wells said during Thursday’s club media availability.
“The group has been getting better and working, while trying to get out of the place that you're in.
“To have a game where we defended, we rebounded, saw the ball go through the net, and then ultimately, got the win, was a huge deal for us and for the group.
“You always talk about how the group's connecting and playing well, but you need to win to validate where you are as a group.”
That Round 20 victory capped a tough stretch for the Sixers, who have gone 3-5 in their past eight matches.
But coach Wells believes all teams go through adversity during the season, and his league-leaders have grown from the experience.
“In a tough, hard-playing league that has 33 games, you're going to hit some adversity,” Wells said.
“There are just going to be some ups and downs, and it's good that we hit it [before finals], to be honest with you.
“As a coach, you're looking for those windows where you can get better, but generally, the best growth and improvement comes from going through a few losses, rather than wins.
“As a group, you've got to find those positives to move the group forward.”
The 36ers’ next chance to impress will come on Saturday evening, when they host New Zealand.
That Round 21 match tips off at 5.30pm AEDT, live on ESPN.
