The Cairns Taipans have thanked Sam Waardenburg for his service to the club, wishing him well as he takes “another step in his NBL journey”.
The 27-year-old departs after four seasons, having won the NBL’s Next Generation Award in 2023.
He played just eight games in NBL26 due to ankle injuries, but remains one of the most talented big men in the League.
In a recent episode of The Marketplace, ESPN’s Olgun Uluc suggested Melbourne United could be chasing the talented Tall Black.
“Melbourne United had Jesse Edwards at the five spot last season, and we knew they would likely need to target one of those marquee bigs we’ve spoken about, like Will Magnay, Sam Mennenga or Sam Waardenburg,” Uluc said on The Marketplace, presented by Paywise.
“It feels like they’re a team that could emerge as the front-runner for Sam Waardenburg.
“Big Kiwi, 16 and 6 last season. He only played eight games, so durability is a legitimate concern, but the talent is not.
“We know how talented he is, and we know how much Dean Vickerman loves his Kiwis.”
Free Agency officially tips off Friday, with a special live edition of The Marketplace on NBL.com.au and the NBL App from 8:30am AEST.
