The NBL and WNBL announced Optus as an exciting new major partner on Friday, with a focus on innovation and connection to the community.

Few know the importance of fans to both clubs and the sport of basketball more than the players.

One NBL star who was in Sydney for the special announcement was NBL Next Star and newly signed Cairns Taipan, Luke Paul.

“It's super exciting to join a League like the NBL and have them partner with someone like Optus, who is so connected to the community,” Paul said.

“The fans and crowds in Cairns always play with so much energy, and I can’t wait to play in front of them.”

Echoing the 17-year-old Next Star’s comments was Australian Opal Steph Reid, who recently committed to the Tasmania Jewels for their inaugural season.

“I'm beyond excited to come back to the League,” Reid said.

“After years overseas, I've really missed it here. I've seen the growth of this League, and to have the opportunity to be in a new club and franchise in the Tasmania Jewels is super exciting.

“It’s great to see partners like Optus coming in with the focus on community, which I believe is missed overseas.

“This League does such an amazing job of putting the community first, and I believe Optus is only going to help that.”

Fellow WNBL star Lauren Nicholson, who plays with her junior club Sutherland in NBL1 East, knows the importance of community firsthand.

“Growing up, my local club was a big part of my journey, and it still is now,” Sydney Flames' Nicholson said.

“Optus investing in the grassroots of basketball is really important for our game, making it more accessible for kids to play more and hopefully fall in love with it just like I did.

“I’ve always said, I wanted to leave the game in a better place than when I first started playing, and partnerships like this are only going to help achieve that.”
