McGee embracing new role as Hawks' main man

Three-time NBA champion JaVale McGee is embracing his new role as a superstar of the Illawarra Hawks.
For the entirety of his career, JaVale McGee has filled whatever role his team needs.
During his time in the NBA, he was a role player, helping the Golden State Warriors (two) and the Los Angeles Lakers win NBA championships.
He filled a similar role with the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games squad with Team USA, which claimed the gold medal.
But now in the NBL, the 37-year-old has been thrust into the role of team superstar with the Illawarra Hawks.
Through the first 17 games of the Hungry Jack’s NBL26 season, the University of Nevada, Reno alum is averaging 22 points, 10.6 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game.
The transition to team star has been a pleasant one, the 37-year-old said in recent interview with Men’s Health Australia.
“It’s not much of an adjustment, really. If anything, it’s a pleasure,” McGee said.
“Because it’s not that hard to be a role player. You know your role, and you get it done as a professional. As a role player, the game becomes more of a job.
“But when you’re the star, the game is a lot more fun and intentional. I have more space [now] to play how I want.”
JaVale McGee is a $456,700 centre in the NBL’s official fantasy game, Beat The Coach, presented by Choice Hotels. Take on Damon Lowery and Beat the Coach in any round of the NBL26 Season and you’ll receive an entry into the end-of-season $10,000 prize draw, including $5,000 cash and $5,000 in Choice Hotels™ gift vouchers. McGee’s reigning champions, who are 6-12 on the season, next travel to Qudos Bank Arena for a Christmas night blockbuster with the Sydney Kings, tipping off from 8.30pm AEDT on ESPN and Channel 10.
